Lasik Surgery: Risks
Complications
There are a few complications that can result from having the Lasik procedure. The risk of complications over the history of Lasik have usually hovered around 5%. However, everyday there are technology advances that reduce these risks even more. Studies completed in the past few years have lowered these complication levels to nearly 1% of all cases.
Flap Complications
Although still very rare the patient may experience flap complications after LASIK eye surgery. However ver few patients have noted complications such as irregular, incomplete, or an excessively thin or torn flap. The treatment and long-term effects of these complications depend on the type and severity. The majority of flap complications after LASIK eye surgery can be resolved without a loss of vision, although healing may be delayed. If a flap complication does occur, your doctor will make you aware of the specific complication, the treatment options, and the excepted outcomes with these treatments.
Treatment
Only a certain percent of patients achieve 20/20 vision without the use glasses or contacts. You may require more treatment, but more treatment may not be possible. This leads to certain patients still needing contacts or glasses even after surgery.
Long Term Data
Remember Lasik is a relatively new surgery. The first Lasik procedure was completed in 1998. Long term saftey and effectiveness are still being studied.
